Some may recognize Susanna from her current role with Odyssey Adventure Racing as its Director of Competitor Relations and HQ Diva. Susanna first heard of adventure racing while working in retail with Travis “T-rex” Overstreet, founding member of the Odyssey Dirty Dozen climbing crew. Travis’s enthusiasm for the climb sites and admiration of the athletes was contagious. She joined the D12 in 2000, attended the Odyssey AR Academy in 2004, and has been volunteering, racing, and hooked on the AR community ever since.

“I am thrilled to expand my role in the adventure racing community at large as a part of the PQ08 team,” says Susanna. My introduction to AR came through volunteering with Odyssey’s Dirty Dozen climbing crew 8 years ago and, although I initially believed adventure racers to be absolutely nuts, my passion for this community and this sport have grown every year since.”

In between massage therapy clients, Susanna will act as a point of contact for volunteers and assist in coordinating the PQ08 volunteer family over the coming months and out on the course itself.

Robyn Benincasa was born in Long Island, NY, but spent most of her youth in Tempe, AZ, where she competed at the state and national level in gymnastics, diving, and cross country. After graduating from Arizona State University with a B.S. in Marketing, Benincasa accepted a pharmaceutical sales job in the San Diego Territory and earned honors as “Rookie of the Year” in 1990.

Benincasa was shortly thereafter caught by the triathlon bug , and ultimately went on to complete six Ironman races, with two podium finishes in her age group in Kona, Hawaii. By 1995, however, she was really really tired of triathlon AND wearing panty hose to work, so she embarked on a mission to live her dreams of becoming an adventure racer and firefighter.

This will be a weird podcast. I just happen to go to the Target nearby this morning and discovered people camped out waiting to buy a PlayStation 3. The weather was raining and expected to get worse. Others looked on to these soles thinking what kind of person would camp out in the pouring rain for 24-36 hours. Sound familiar? Listen to what drives these people to suffer.

It makes sense that someone who enjoyed law school and is happy practicing tax law would also get a kick out of running non-stop for up to 24 hours or competing in week-long adventure races or snowshoe racing at high altitude and in sub-zero temperatures.  Raised in Boulder, Colorado, Adam thrives on endurance sports in the mountains.  In his 20+ years of endurance competition, he’s run the distance of a marathon or more at least 100 times, mostly on hilly trails.  He ran and did triathlons during college and law school and then jumped into ultramarathons and snowshoe racing, which led to adventure racing.  Adam has won more than 20 ultramarathons, is the captain and manager of Team Atlas Snow-Shoe Company and has been on many sponsored running and adventure racing teams with which he’s traveled all over the world and competed in Eco Challenge, the Raid World Championships, and won the US National Championships.

He serves as the President of the All American Trail Running Association, Trail Representative for the Mountain/Ultra/Trail Running Council of the USA Track & Field Colorado, and the United States Snowshoe Association.  As a writer, Chase is the co-author of The Ultimate Guide to Trail Running and an editor for Running Times and Active Cities USA.  He lives in Boulder, where he is a partner of a law firm.  Adam is also the father of two boys, Noah and David.  Having just turned 40, Adam wonders if he’s now mature enough to spend time weeding his front lawn, which is now properly termed “zero-scaping”.  Probably not.  That time is better spent running!

They come from as far away as Alaska and Costa Rica.  They converged on the tiny community of Jay, Vermont, nestled along the northern border of Vermont to face one of the most grueling adventure events in North America.

Three days of racing challenged the best. The 26-mile water event, the Jay Crossover, started in Magog, Quebec and ended in Newport, Vermont.  The 31-mile running segment began with a race to the top of Jay Peak, northern Vermont’s highest mountain, and then took the runners on a treacherous mix of trails, water, and river crossings. The 65-mile mountain bike segment started with an immediate climb to the top of the mountain.  Those who used up all their energy in that first stretch never finished.

This year over 550 men and 150 women signed up for one or more of the stages. Seventy of them faced the true Jay Challenge, competing in all three legs. Only 31 finished. Listen to competitors who won, who fell and could not finsh. Proud parents and support teams. Plus see over 200 pictures at http://www.gofarpodcast.com/jay
